  • High school senior
  • Majoring in education, and plan to work in NC as a teacher to repay this scholarship
  • In the top 5-10% of their class
  • Have high academic achievement
  • Community service

  • Enrollment full time as a high school senior

Horatio Alger North Carolina Scholarship

  • Exhibited integrity and perseverance in overcoming personal adversity

  • Strong commitment to pursuing a bachelor's degree at an accredited institution located in the United States

Coca-Cola Scholarship

  • Current high school senior attending school in the US.
  • US Citizens; US Nationals; US Permanent Residents
  • Seniors planning to pursue a degree at an accredited US postsecondary institution.
  • Seniors a GPA of a 3.0 or higher
  • You cannot be the child or grandchild of employees, officers, or owners of Coca-Cola bottling companies, the Coca-Cola Company or any bottler of Company divisions or subsidiaries.

Prudential Spirit of Community Award

·        A High School senior

·        Has engaged in a volunteer activity that occurred at least partly during the 12 months prior to the date of application.

·        Completes an application form following all directions carefully, and submits it to a school principal

·        Entering an accredited college in Fall 2008

NC Division of Veterans Affairs Scholarships

  • Must be the child of a disabled, deceased, combat, or POW/MIA war veteran
  • Student must be a lifelong resident of NC and/or veteran parent must have been a resident of NC and entered/enlisted in military service in NC

Appalachian Scholarships

  • Must plan to attend Appalachian State University

Robertson Scholars

§         Cannot have applied for the Morehead Cain Scholarship

  • A senior who is African American, American Indian/Alaska Native, Asian Pacific Islander American or Hispanic American
  • Must be a citizen, legal resident, or national of the United States
  • Must have a cumulative unweighted GPA of 3.3
  • Must be enrolling for the 1st time at an accredited U.S. college
  • Must be enrolling as a full time freshman into a degree seeking program for Fall 2009
  • Must have demonstrated leadership abilities through participation in community service, extracurricular and other activates
  • Must meet the Federal Pell Grant eligibility (Only determined by filling out the FASFA and sending in to the US Dept. of Education.)
  • Have all required forms submitted by the due date

  • Pogue Scholarship provides a renewable award of $7,500 for N.C. recipients

·        Graduate from high school this academic year
·        Earn a minimum cumulative high school GPA of 2.75 or higher
·        Plan to pursue a bachelor's degree at a public, in-state college or university (start date no later than 9/30/09)

o       Scholars may begin their college career by entering into either a 2-or 4-year accredited in-state college/university, as long as they stay on track to complete a bachelor's degree program.

·        Be a US citizen or permanent resident
·        Demonstrate financial need

Bank of America Joe Martin Scholarship
  • Must be a dependent of an An active full-time or part-time Bank of America associate (service with predecessor banks or subsidiaries of Bank of America is counted as Bank of America service)
    • Been employed for at least 1 year
    • In job bands 3 - 9 at the time the scholarship is awarded.  (Associates in job bands 0 - 2 are not eligible).
      • Dependents of deceased, disabled, or retired associates also are eligible
  • Must be 23 years of age or younger
  • Be a high school senior
  • Plan to be enrolled in full-time undergraduate course of study at an accredited 2- or 4-year college, university, or vocational/technical school
  • Enroll in the college of their choice no later than the fall of the year in which the award is given
  • Have an above average academic record
  • Be actively involved in school and community activities
  • Possess a desire to pursue educational and career goals

  • Must be a senior planning to attend East Carolina University

N C Elks Lodge “Nursing” Scholarship

  • Must be a senior
  • Must be a US citizen
  • Must be accepted for enrollment at NC school of nursing where the student will qualify to take the licensing examination for registered nurse
  • Be in the top 25% of your class (Counts 20% of the eligibility.)
  • Must be active in student health care activities (Counts 30% of the eligibility.)
  • Have financial need (Counts 50% of the eligibility.)
  • Have good quality exhibits evidencing notable achievements in scholarship, leadership, athletics, dramatics, community service or other activities
  • Read and follow all applications directions exactly as written

N C Elks Lodge Most Valuable Student Scholarship

  • Must be a senior
  • Must be a US citizen
  • Males and Females compete separately
  • Scholarship counts for 45% of the eligibility
  • Be in the top 5% of your class
  • Successful applicants have had a SAT score of greater than 1100 (Verbal and Math)
    • The scholarship committee requests you do not submit and application if you have a SAT score of under 1000
  • Must be active in extracurricular activities (Leadership counts 35% of the eligibility.)
  • Have financial need (Counts 20% of the eligibility.)
  • Have good quality exhibits
  • Have good quality exhibits evidencing notable achievements in scholarship, leadership, athletics, dramatics, community service or other activities
  • Read and follow all applications directions exactly as written

Eligibility Criteria

·         Must be nominated by a teacher or staff member (We can only nominate a certain number of students.)

·         Must be selected and recommended by your high school

·         Must be a U S Citizen

·         Must be a legal resident of North Carolina

·         Must provide assurance that you will graduate from a public/charter or non-public secondary school during 2008-2009 academic year

·         Must be selected and recommended by your high school

·         Must not be in default on a Federal Student Loan

·         Must enroll full-time at an accredited institution of higher education for the 2009-2010 academic year

Selection Criteria:

  1. Each application must indicate the congressional district in which they reside.  (This information can be obtained from the local board of elections or www.house.gov/writerep)  Our congressional district is 5.
  2. The following criteria shall be used to determine outstanding academic achievement:
    • SAT score with a combined total of 1860 or an ACT score of 28 or greater
    • High School GPA is a minimum unweighted 3.5
    • Class Rank (must be reported in percentage; upper 5%, 10%, 15%, 20%)

Nurse Scholars Program (NSP) Loan/Scholarship Undergraduate Program

  • Minimum Grade Point Average of a 3.0 or higher
  • Recipients must be North Carolina residents
  • Plan to enter a nursing program at a participating college or university in the state of North Carolina or hospitals that offer nurse education programs which prepare students for licensure as a Registered Nurse (RN)
  • Be enrolled on a full-time basis: 12 credit hours per semester
  • Scholarship eligibility is based on:
    • Superior academics 
    • Leadership potential
    • And a desire to practice nursing on a full-time basis in North Carolina
  • The NSP scholarship/loan recipient enters into a contract with the State of North Carolina to work full time as a Registered Nurse in North Carolina
    • Twelve months of service as a full-time nurse cancels one year of NSP funding support received. Service repayment must be completed within seven years from graduation
    • The interest rate for cash repayment is 10% and cash repayment must be repaid within ten years from graduation
  • All supporting documentation to the application (transcripts, reference forms, etc.) must be postmarked by February 28, 2009
  • The application data will be submitted electronically
  • Email is the official form of communication between the Nurse Scholars Program and the applicant

    • Merit-Based scholarship information is sent out by mid-January for those who applied by the 1st application deadline and by mid-march for those who applied by the 2nd application deadline.

NC State University Chancellor’s Leadership Scholarship

  • Must be a high school senior
  • Must have submitted your online application for Undergraduate Admission to NC State University no later than 5:00 PM on February 1, 2009
    •  All Undergraduate Admission required materials must be postmarked by the February 1, 2009 deadline
    • It is not necessary to have been accepted for admission at the time you begin your Chancellor's Leadership Scholarship Application. It is only necessary that you have applied for admission and submitted all required admission materials
  • Must have applied and submitted your 2009-2010 FAFSA form by March 1, 2009
    • Chancellor's Leadership Scholarship applicants must demonstrate a significant level of financial need, as demonstrated by the FAFSA, in order to receive the scholarship

North Carolina Millennium Teacher Scholarship/Loan Program

  • Must be a North Carolina resident
  • Must be a high school senior interested in teaching in North Carolina public schools
  • Must enroll at one of three campuses:
    • Elizabeth City State University
    • Fayetteville State University
    • Winston-Salem State University
      • Only 20 students will be able to be selected at each of the three participating campuses
  • Must have a minimum SAT score of 900
  • Must have a weighted grade point average of 2.5 or higher
    Candidates for the NC Millennium Teacher Scholarship Loan Program must have at least $3,000 worth of financial aid need as determined by the campus financial aid office
  • Scholarship recipients are required to teach in a North Carolina public school for one year for each year of scholarship assistance they receive.  Scholars have seven years from the date of graduation to repay the loan, either through service or cash repayment at 10% interest
  • Information is available through the Schools of Education or Financial Aid Offices at the three participating campuses.  See the links below for individual school contact

  • Must be African-American, Hispanic/Latino, or American Indian
  • Demonstrate high academic achievement in chemistry or science
  • Must have a Grade Point Average of 3.0 or higher
  • Demonstrate financial need according to the FAFSA and the Student Aid Report (SAR) form

Nurse Education Scholarship Loan Program (NESLP)

  • Applicants must be US citizens and NC residents for tuition purposes.
  • NESLP awards are available through the financial aid offices of North Carolina colleges and universities that offer nurse education programs which prepare students for licensure in North Carolina as a Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) or a Registered Nurse (RN)
  • Awards are based upon:
    •  Financial need
    • Academic performance
  • The NSP scholarship/loan recipient enters into a contract with the State of North Carolina to work full time as a Registered Nurse in North Carolina
    • Loans not repaid through service must be repaid in cash. The interest rate for cash repayment is 10% per year
    • Student has up to seven years to repay loan in service or ten years to repay loan in cash

Marine Corps Scholarship Foundation

  • Must be the child of one of the following:
    • An active duty or reserve U. S. Marine 
    • A U.S. Marine who has served at least 90 days and has received an honorable discharge, medical discharge, or was killed while serving in the U.S. Marine Corps 
    • An active duty or reserve U.S. Navy Corpsman who is serving, or has served, with the U.S. Marine Corps 
    • A U.S. Navy Corpsman who has served with the U.S. Marine Corps and has received an honorable discharge, medical discharge, or was killed while serving in the U.S. Navy
  • A high school graduate, or registered as an undergraduate student studying for a first bachelor's degree at an accredited college, or at a post-high school vocational/technical institution
  • Maximum family adjusted gross income of $80,000 or less
    • For the purpose of determining eligibility, non-taxable allowances received by military members on active duty are NOT included in determining adjusted gross income
    • This income limit requirement is waived for any applicant whose parent was killed in combat in the Global War on Terror
  • GPA of 2.0 or higher

  • Must be a legal resident of the 48 contiguous United States or the District of Columbia

  • Applicants cannot be on suspension or other disciplinary program imposed by the school or school system at any time in the 2008-2009 school year
  • Applicants cannot have been arrested, charged with, or convicted of any crime
    • Sponsors may, in their sole discretion, complete a background check of Applicant including civil, financial, driver-history, any drug or alcohol dependency or treatment, criminal arrests or convictions, or law suits – either settled or still pending
  • If selected as a potential winner, in order to avail himself/herself of the prize, Applicant must graduate at the end of the regular 2008-2009 school year

Prospective Teachers Scholarship-Loan

  • Committed to a career choice of teaching
  • Unweighted GPA of a 2.5 or higher
  • Receive a score of 900 or higher on SAT or a score of 19 or higher on ACT
  • A school official such as a high school guidance counselor or principal must recommend high school students for this award
  • Please note that students who are current recipients of the Future Teachers of North Carolina Scholarship/Loan, the Physical Education - Coaching Scholarship/Loan, or the Teaching Fellows Program are not eligible to apply for the PTSL program
  • The PTSL recipient enters into a contract with the State of North Carolina to work full time as a teacher in the State's public schools. One year of service as a full time teacher cancels one year of funding support received. Service repayment must be completed within seven years from graduation. The interest rate for cash repayment is 10% and the cash repayment must be made within ten years of graduation.

Yadkin County Association of Educators Scholarship

  • The applicant must be a child of a Yadkin County NCAE member.  The parent or guardian of the applicant must have been a member in good standing for the last three years

  • If the committee feels that a recommendation is needed, it may be required from the faculty members at the applicant’s school

·        Plan to attend one of the University of NC 16 campuses public schools

    • Students planning to attend private universities or out-of-schools are not eligible 
    • Must plan to be a full-time student in good standing with the SAME university for up to 8 consecutive fall/spring semesters.
      • Scholarships are NOT transferable without prior approval of SECU foundation
  • A U.S. citizen and a resident of NC
  • Preference given to students whose parents or guardians and family members are public sector employees who live and work in NC

  • At least one parent must be a member of the NC Child Support Council or a Client of the Child Support Program (either through Child Support services or Clerk of Court services)

  • Applicant must have been accepted by a North Carolina school of higher learning: a College, University, Community College, or Technical School

·        A U.S. citizen and/or a legal and permanent resident of the United States

  • A student who demonstrates:
    • Achievement
    • Possesses a strong record of participation in activities outside of school

American Foundation for the Blind 2009 Scholarship

  • Proof of Legal Blindness:
    •  AFB requires a recently signed letter on a single page of official stationery from an optometrist, ophthalmologist, or state or private agency for the blind, certifying that you are legally blind.
  • Must have submitted your FAFSA (Free Application For Federal Student Aid):
    •  AFB requires a copy of the Student Aid Report (SAR) section of your FAFSA application. 
    • No other proof of economic need will be considered.
    •   Please make sure that the entire Student Aid Report is sent to us.
  • Proof of U.S. Citizenship:
    • Only the following items will be accepted:
      • A photocopy of a birth certificate
      • Naturalization papers
      • A photocopy of a U.S. passport
        • [EXCEPTION: U.S. citizenship is NOT required for the Ferdinand Torres Scholarship.]
